Acoustic Weapons in Nature
Summary
The ocean is filled with a cacophony of animal noise, which can even disrupt the sonic transmission of submarines. One such creature which is noted as one of the loudest animals of the sea is the tiny pistol shrimp. The pistol shrimp uses its claw as a sonic weapon. It cocks its claw like a pistol. As the claw snaps shut, the resultant cavitation fires a blast of bubbles and creates an implosion which kills its prey (and which can also shatter glass). In addition, as the cavitation bubbles collapse, they reach the temperature of the sun.
