Summary
Apart from the usual intriguing factors such as zero gravity associated with space flights, there are other factors such as the food that the crew eats while on board. Dieticians and food scientists at the NASA Food Systems Engineering Facility at Johnson’s Space Center work towards ensuring that the space crew has the best and the healthiest of food available to satiate their hunger. Blind taste tests are conducted and the food items are rated on a number of attributes like appearance and flavor. If the item fits the bill then it is added to the list of food items from which the astronauts choose their personal favorites. This meticulous planning is essential since food has a psychological effect on the crew members. The dieticians prepare the food several months before the actual flight. The food is cooked and it is put into portion control plates and it then undergoes freeze drying. This is done in order to dry up the moisture so that bacteria cannot grow in it. This dried up food then undergoes rehydration in the space shuttle so that it becomes edible.
