Guiding Light With Nanowires
Summary
Nanotechnology is the future as far as invention of smaller and more compact devices is concerned. Nanotechnology implies technology that is extremely small. This video provides an explanation on the way light travels through a medium and how light travels through different mediums carrying information. Nano fibers that carry light can be used to create tiny communication devices. Mr. Eric Mazur from Harvard University explains that light travels more slowly in dense materials like plastic or glass and hence we see a reflection in such denser mediums. One of the major problems with optical fibers is that there is considerable information loss at every juncture where the wire gets sharply bent. This is one of the main reasons that are holding back silicon photonics. This problem can be eliminated by bringing nano-wires into the arena.
