Heat Sensing Helmets
Summary
Since 1955, there have been 115 deaths directly related to heat in American football. This is because young football players are “gluttons for punishment” – trying to lose weight before weigh in, then trying to re-hydrate at game time.
Researchers in Atlanta, Georgia are attempting to create a heat-sensing football helmet to help prevent heat stroke. The technology itself is unnoticeable by the player. The hardware, a microprocessor, is mounted in the crown of the helmet. It is in essence a thermometer, to measure the temperature inside a football player’s helmet.
Pre-existing medical conditions, doctor information, and other information is also stored in the microprocessor.
When the body core temperature rises above 106 degrees Fahrenheit, a football player, or anyone, can have heat stroke.
