Summary
Steve Wozniak, John Draper and Kevin Mitnick are considered to be the pioneers of hacking. Wozniak (co-founder of Apple) and John Draper were not criminals, per se. It was Kevin Mitnick who turned it into a criminal enterprise. “It’s about forbidden knowledge. It’s about pranksterism.”
Hacking had two meanings. Its first meaning was “a guy who used to sit all night long on a borrowed computer, trying to devise the ultimate computer.” Eventually, however, the term – and the activity – morphed into that of setting out to “hack into” other people’s computers, and destroy the programs within. It began with “phone freaks,” people who took up the technical challenge of figuring out to call long-distance for free. That same kind of innovation and desire to meet the technical challenge extended to computers.
