Invisibility Research: Making things invisible!
Summary
Researchers are reporting real progress in making a fact of what was once considered to be possible only in works of science fiction. Researchers at duke university have created a device that renders objects invisible to microwave radiation. This device consists of a ring of concentric circles made of specially fabricated meta-materials that bend the microwaves and cause them to make a detour around the object. So, when an object is put inside the ring, it is effectively rendered invisible to microwaves. Skeptics point out that visible light is on a scale 1000 times smaller than microwaves and interacts differently with various materials. Moreover, this microwave based invisibility device can be operated only in two dimensions as of now. Researchers at the university of Stuttgart in Germany have created a meta material that operates in the infra red light range. This special device is made from horse shoe shaped gold nano wires that are stacked to form a 3D grid. Super stealth planes, incredibly efficient antennas, invisibility cloaks are some of the high end applications that could be made a reality by invisibility researchers across the globe.
