LASIK Eye Surgery
Summary
If you are one who doesn’t like glasses or are tired of taking care of eye lenses, then LASIK is the panacea for you. LASIK is an eye surgery that reduces the dependence on glasses or contact lenses by correcting myopia and hypermetropia. LASIK stands for LASER assisted in situ keratomileusis. The surgery starts with the doctor using a lid speculum to hold the eye lid open. Then a ring is placed on the eye to create suction on the cornea. Equipment called microkeratome is attached to the suction ring. Using the blade of the microkeratome the outermost 20% of the cornea is cut and lifted carefully to one side. After removing the suction ring and microkaretome, pulses from a computer controlled LASER are used to shrink the cornea by vaporizing tiny portions of its interior. The corneal flap is then placed back to its original location. The healing is rapid and the patient is relieved permanently of wearing glasses/lenses.
