Man with Golden Cells
Summary
If you think that your blood, cells or tissues that are leftover as part of a medical procedure end up in trash in the hospital, you may need to rethink. Human cells, tissues and genes are now the object of investment and global trade. Although trade in human organs is prohibited, ambiguity arises in case of trade of cells and tissues. Many scientists and pharmaceutical companies are interested in those resources. This video brings forward the case of John Moore who was suffering from a rare and deadly form of leukemia. He got his spleen removed in a hospital but his doctor David Goldie studied his cells and found that his cells were capable of producing enormous amount of hormone CSF which can be used in cancer treatment. Dr. Goldie teamed up with a pharma giant and doctor Tom Maniatis in order to explore the commercial possibilities of the cells. But in 1984 John Moore initiated a legal action against the patent application by the doctors.
