New Oil and Gas Exploration
Summary
Crude oil and natural gas are the two main fossil fuels being used extensively in the world. The limited supply of such commodities makes them even more valuable. Microorganisms situated deep on the ocean floor have created vast pockets of oil and natural gas over a period of million years. Oil is also formed from layers of dead marine life covered by muddy sediment when cooked under pressure and high temperatures for long periods of time. Geoscientists explore places in order to find oil and natural gas reservoirs. This video portrays the Permian Basin in the Guadalupe Mountains of far West Texas. The Permian Basin is the bottom of an ancient ocean and is an ancient oil reserve. Reflection seismic surveys are a new technique to find out oil and gas reservoirs. Using sound waves, seismic images create a picture of the underwater surface. The sound waves echo back from the surface under water and scientists analyze the images and assess the probability of oil and gas deposits.
