Science of Laughter
Summary
Laughter is something that takes place in every person’s life. It is completely unconscious. On average, each of us laughs about 18 times a day. Although laughter is something we all experience, each part of the world has its own unique sense of humor. One of the key elements in understanding comedy is that laughter is a social experience. Laughter is contagious. When we hear someone laugh, we are far more likely to laugh along with it. It’s why laughter in groups is very different than laughter while we are alone. If an individual watches something that’s funny, while alone, typically he or she doesn’t laugh out loud. However, if they are watching surrounded by friends and family, they do laugh out loud, because it’s a social signal – they’re telling their friends and family that they find what they are watching funny.
